Good device let down by a poor app and slow indexing, 17 Aug. 2014

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What’s this?)
Slighty bigger and chunkier than a stand alone hard drive, getting media onto this streaming device is straight-forward. Connect it to your PC and drag and drop your files onto it. As well as a media streaming device you can also use it as a normal hard drive. I loaded it with approximately 1,800 CDs ripped to MP3 and 120 films ripped to MP4.

Setting it up with my Samsung Galaxy Tab was also really straight-forward. It creates it’s own Wi-Fi hotspot that was recognised by the Samsung Wireless app I’d already installed. You can use it with an iPad using the web browser (there is no iOS app) but it was just far too buggy and unresponsive to make it worthwhile.

I must admit that I’m not that impressed with the app in both the way it’s laid out and how it performs. It’s absolutely fine with my MP4 videos. Because they’re not in folders and sub folders, all 120 films showed up almost immediately and were ready to play but it’s taking an age to index all of my MP3s that are in Artist/Album sub folders. After over 75 hours of use it’s still indexing them and until they’ve all been indexed I can’t see and therefore access all of my MP3s. Also, when playing back an album you have to select all of the tracks to playback the whole album instead of just hitting one ‘play’ tab. Additionally, the album artwork appears in the ‘Photos’ folder in the app mixed up with your own photos! It’s all a bit clumsy.

Playback of MP4 films is superb – I’ve had three devices simultaneously streaming different films with no playback problems whatsoever. The battery is OK but nothing special – when playing back a film on one device it lasts for about 4 hours so if your using this with multiple devices in a car you might want to invest in a car USB charger. When playing back MP3 files encoded at 320kbps on one device, the battery lasts for approximately 6 hours.

Overall this is a good device that allows you to carry a massive amount of media around with you and play it back on your Android device. However, it’s let down by a poor app, a limited battery and slow indexing. If Samsung can sort out these issues (particularly the app) and also make it run more smoothly on the iOS browser (or go one better and produce an iOS app) then this is a 4 Star bit of kit pushing 5 Stars. Until then it only rates 3 Stars.

Could be a great device but mine had too many flaws, 28 Dec. 2014

I bought this drive to take our music and movie collection on holiday in the summer but have only got around to reviewing it now so hopefully things might have improved since then.
I found the unit got quite hot and drained the battery down in about 3 hours while trying to watch films.
Also the wireless connection to both my tablet and phone would drop after about 20 minutes so was not reliable enough to watch a film without constant interruptions. Is this related to the possible overheating mentioned above? Perhaps I got a dud.
No problem I thought I’ll just connect via the USB lead. However, it would not work with either my Nexus 10 tablet or Galaxy S4 phone via USB with On The Go adapter cable.
The USB OTG cable was working fine because I could watch films on the phone and tablet from a USB stick plugged into the cable. (Needed to purchase Nexus media importer for the Nexus 10)

The device showed immediately as a removable hard drive on my computer and copying files onto it was very easy.
Except, I could not load a film greater than 4Gb onto the device because it is pre formatted to Fat 32. I believe you can reformat the device to a more advanced file system but I was not prepared to do that in case it prejudiced my ability to return the unit.

Amazon and the seller refunded my money without any problems so it might be worth a go because if it did everything reliably it would have been a great device.

A lot of reviewers here have had issue with the Samsung Wireless app used to browse and view media on their tablet/phone but for me, the experience has been flawless. I bought the drive at the beginning of December and have used it extensively since, both for viewing content via a USB port on a TV and also through the app on my tablet.

The drive connects using Wi-Fi, creating a network for you ( you don’t need an existing Wi-Fi- network to use this – perfect for out and about ) and I’ve tested it at a range of over 20 metres in different rooms. It copes well even at this distance and so far there have been no interruptions to anything I’ve watched. Setup is easy, I have the drive formatted to use on a Mac and files are dragged and dropped onto it. Transfer times are quick the 1.5 TB of storage means I can squeeze lots of movies and TV shows on it without worry about their size.

There is a slight whirr from the drive when it’s first called into action but settles down afterwards and cannot be heard during movie playback. I have a 16gb Xperia tablet and with limited storage like this, the Samsung wireless mobile media product is ideal as an expansion.

I managed to time it right and got it for £90 through Amazon but would happily pay £120 for it. Very pleased customer! Any questions, drop me a comment. Hope this helps
