Apple Watch 2 release update: Mobile data connectivity and 40 percent thinner design expected

Apple is rumored to be working on a sequel model of Apple Watch that was launched in April last year. Fresh rumours indicate the Apple Watch 2 will be arriving with support for mobile data connectivity

The current Apple Watch relies on a tethered connection with an iPhone to display alerts for new messages and calls. The inclusion of data connectivity will enable users to make phone calls through the smartwatch. Also, they will be able to take advantage features like GPS and live streaming music. The rumour mill has been consistently claiming since several months that users will be able to use the Apple Watch independently without an iPhone. Starting from June 1 this year, all the apps that are submitted to the Apple Store for watchOS will be native applications. This way, the next generation Apple Watch will provide much-requested independence from iPhone.

The native apps will not only load faster but also work efficiently without transmitting data to an iPhone that is connected via Bluetooth and vice-versa. The Apple Watch 2 is also speculated to arrive with an upgraded processor to deliver faster performance. Android smartwatches from LG and Samsung running on Android Wear OS have featured support for mobile data connectivity since the past few years. However, the first generation Apple Watch did not feature it. Hence, it is one of the most anticipated features of Apple Watch 2.

As of this writing, there is no official confirmation on the features of the Apple Watch 2. Speculations also indicate that the Apple Watch sequel will be coming with 40 percent slimmer chassis compared to its predecessor. As far as Apple Watch 2 release date is concerned, early speculations suggest that it will be unveiled alongside the iPhone 7 models in September this year.

However, other rumours have claimed that it may get unveiled in June this year.
