LG Unveils First Made-in-India Smartphones

South Korea s LG launched two LTE handsets in India the K7 and K10 that will be the first smartphones the company produces in the country. LG Electronics India MD Kim Ki-Wan said India is a strategic market for the company globally and the decision to manufacture smartphones in India underscores that.

We want to tap the huge potential for smartphones in the country. While these devices are in the sub-INR15,000 price band, they have features typically seen only in premium devices. We are optimistic that Indian consumers will love the premium-ness of the K7 and K10 at regular prices, he said at the launch event in Delhi. India has the second largest number of smartphone users in the world, behind China, but only four out of ten mobile phone users own a smartphone.

Both LTE smartphones, which also support VoLTE and VoWi-Fi, have 2.5D Arc Glass and run Android 5.1 Lollipop. The K Series models are first to offer LG s glossy pebble design with a curved finish, the company said. The 5-inch K7 is priced at INR9,500 ($142), while the 5.3-inch K10 goes for INR13,500 ($202).

One in three smartphones sold in India last year was sold through e-commerce channels1, but Kim didn t mention the company s online sales strategy. Last month LG added two devices to its K Series line2 to cater to the diverse needs and wants of customers around the world . It said the K8 and K5 were introduced in key markets.
