Motorola’s Moto X 2016 model is put through its paces to reveal Snapdragon 820 innards

We haven’t heard much from Motorola in a while on the subject of a new flagship device, and it seems in many ways that new owner Lenovo is running a more secretive show than we’re used to, but now the Moto X 2016 edition has been spotted in benchmark software carrying a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Earlier statements from Lenovo said that the firm will be “phasing out” the Motorola branding but the “Moto” brand will live on for premium-grade devices. We have also seen plenty of evidence of some mid-range models in the form of 2016 editions of the Moto G and a new Moto G Plus is also rumoured. In the Geekbench database, picked up by Mobipicker1, the Motorola XT1650 (sounds like a killer robot from the Terminator movies) chalked up a single-core score of 2,309 and a multi-core score of 5,344 with its Qualcomm hardware. This is of course the same chipset inside the LG G5, HTC 10, and some editions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 series (though only the ones sold in Asia), and the scoring is in a similar ballpark. As well as the Snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM there’s also Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow onboard. The phone isn’t revealed as the Moto X 2016, but this is flagship calibre stuff and unless Lenovo is engaging in some unforeseen re-branding exercise it seems unlikely it could be anything else.

A Lenovo event has been scheduled for June 9, which could see the handset launch alongside a new Moto G and other Lenovo devices. Will the Moto X keep the “Style” and “Pure” branding editions we saw last year? Frankly we hope not, as diluting the brand didn’t seem to do it any favours; we really hope Motorola gets an opportunity to hone in on making one consistent and really stellar flagship this year.
