Would You Pay $21K for This Unique Apple iPad Pro?

Got an extra $21,000 lying around? Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive donated a one-of-a-kind 12.9-inch iPad Pro to the Design Museum’s Time for Design auction1. The auction will raise money for the London gallery’s upcoming relocation, and features “generous donations” from globally renowned designers and collectors, according to Wallpaper2. Among them is Ive, who created a colorful tablet and accessory collection3: iPad Pro, iPad Smart Cover, Apple Pencil and holder, which the gallery hopes to sell for 10,000 to 15,000 ($14,200 to $21,300). London-born Ive has a long history with the museum, where he showed a prototype mobile phone in 1990 two years before becoming an Apple employee. He later went on to win the institution’s first “Designer of the Year” award in 2003 for the iMac.

“To support the museum, Ive and his team in Cupertino have designed this special iPad Pro in a unique color numbered Edition 1 of 1,” director Deyan Sudjic said in a statement.

It comes in an exclusive shade of yellow, with a blue, suede-lined Smart Cover crafted from French leather, Wallpaper reported; the orange Apple Pencil case was created out of Italian calf leather. The live auction will take place April 28. All profits from the sale will be donated to the Design Museum’s campaign for its new home in Holland Park.

“We are extremely grateful to the friends of the museum who had donated such outstanding pieces, often from their personal collections, to help fulfil our ambition of creating one of London’s most important new cultural sites,” Sudjic said. Apple’s large-screen tablet launched in September4, before hitting shelves in the fall. The iPad Pro5 comes in silver, gold, or space gray, and starts at $799 for a 32GB version. The 128GB model costs $949; add LTE for a total of $1,079. It also supports the stylus known as Apple Pencil6. A smaller, 9.7-inch version7 launched last month.
