It is, however, only available for American Express card members currently. Apple is working with other banks, including DBS, UOB and Standard Chartered, to launch Apple Pay for their cardholders in the coming months , said Ms Jennifer Bailey, Vice-President of Apple Pay. The Apple Singapore website also stated that support for Visa cards would be coming soon. Apple Pay allows users to connect their credit or debit cards to a mobile wallet. iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch users can then pay at stores by holding their mobile devices next to terminals with near field communication (NFC) technology.

Apple Pay will be available for use at various retailers in Singapore, including Starbucks, FairPrice, StarHub, Uniqlo, TopShop, and Shaw Theatres. Additional partners like BreadTalk, Cold Storage, FoodRepublic and Giant will be adding support for Apple Pay soon, Apple’s website said. Singapore is the sixth country to get the service, after it was launched in the United States in 2014.

Apple Pay was released in the United Kingdom in July last year, follow by Canada and Australia in November and China in February this year. Apple accounts for nearly 38 per cent of the 1.1 million smartphones shipped to Singapore, according to data from market research firm IDC last year. In a statement last October, Amex said that card holders who use an eligible American Express Card with Apple Pay will get real-time notifications and details for purchases, as well as a enhanced account monitoring and servicing on the Amex Mobile app.
