LOL Surprise! Bigger Surprise! toy costs £85 and this is what you get for your money

L.O.L Surprise! toys will probably feature on a lot of children’s Christmas wish lists and letters to Santa this year – but parents can’t decide if an GBP85 gift set is a “rip-off” or not. The LOL Surprise! Bigger Surprise! toy can be bought for GBP84.99 at Smyths[1] – and one mum has been sharing the contents of bag to let parents know what they’ll get for their money.

Natalie Harrison took a photo of the contents and shared it on Facebook with the caption: “Anyone thinking of buying the lol bigger surprise for GBP84.99 this is what you get,” reports the Manchester Evening News.[2] The photo shows the dolls, wigs and other accessories included in the bag – and it’s sparked hundreds of comments from parents, with many complaining it’s ‘a waste of money’.

But others have defended the price tag, saying your child’s enjoyment is ‘priceless’ – and that parents are paying for their child’s ‘excitement’ to unwrap each item.

However one mum said: “Check this out!!!!

What a rip off!” While another added: “This is disgusting for what you pay.” Ann Hoskins said: “I would have took it back, bloody rip off merchants, disgusting taking the p*** out of young mums who are trying to give the kids what they want to keep them happy.

85 pound for bits of plastic in a case. The Bigger Surprise promises the ‘ultimate unboxing experience’ with ’60 plus never before seen surprises inside with exclusive dolls and accessories’. Natalie’s post had been shared more than 25k times iand received more than 9k comments in its the first 48 hours

She told the M.E.N’s Manchester Family[3] that she wasn’t expecting such a huge response and wasn’t meaning it to sound negative. The mum-of-three and partner Chris Root bought the LOL for their two youngest daughters Amber, six, and three-year-old Brooke. It was a treat to share after LOL-crazy Amber received a haul of the dolls and other gifts for her birthday last month.

Natalie, 30, said: “A lot of my friends have daughters who are into the whole LOL craze and I just wanted to make them aware of what was in the Bigger Surprise one.

I never imagined it would create as much attention as it has, it really is crazy. “I never stated what you get in a negative way and my children did spend a good 45 minutes opening them, so to me their enjoyment was priceless.

“I just know there are some parents out there that would get this for their child and not much else and wanted to give them the heads up.” Others commenting on Natalie’s post agree that it’s about the enjoyment for the children, rather than the cost.

Lorraine Folan said: “If it makes your child happy saving a tenner a week isn’t too much to save to buy it.” Hannah Parkin added: “We’ve bought this. It’s the excitement of it though, plus it’s all packaged and in bags not just like this, and the dolls are exclusive and so are the wigs.”

It’s not the first time the toys have come under fire. Last year another mum’s scathing review[4] of the GBP60 toy went viral after she branded it ‘a waste of money’. Defending the toy, a brand spokesperson said: “LOL Surprise is currently the best selling toy in the UK and a number of other countries.

Prices range from GBP5.99 for the LOL Tots to GBP59.99 for the Big Surprise. “The LOL Big Surprise contains 50 exclusive surprises that can’t be found in other LOL products which individually are valued higher than the total RRP.”
